Abstract

The existence of figurative language as a way of conveying utterance other than its ordinary way helps the song writer in composing and producing beautiful songs. By using figurative language, the singer could deliver the messages existed in a song in a brief yet meaningful way. Furthermore a song entitled “Firework” attracts the researcher’s attention in doing analysis about the types of figurative language. This study then focuses on analyzing the types of figurative language and its meaning found in the song lyric entitled “Firework” by Katy Perry. The aims of the study are to identify and describe the meaning of the types of figurative language used in the song “Firework”. This study implements descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study is the song lyric entitled “Firework” by Katy Perry which is taken from azlyrics.com. This study applies study documentation as the method in collecting the data. The result of data analysis shows that there are six types of figurative language found in the song lyric entitled “Firework” by Katy Perry. They are symbol, hyperbole, simile, personification, metaphor, and paradox. Furthermore, the meaning of these types of figurative language is also described by the researcher.

Abstract

There were two types of speech style which could be divided into formal and informal type. The informal one was well-known by the name of slang. Slang was non-standard language used in the everyday life created by a certain community and usually used by the teenagers in modern era. Slang was not only found in the daily conversation, but also could be found in literary works like song. Song was a literary work which could reflect the reality and express someone’s feelings. This study analyzes the slangs found in five lyrics of Eminem’s song by using descriptive qualitative method. Besides, this study focused on the word formation of the slangs itself. There are 60 data which has been collected from the lyrics.  From the analysis conducted, the types of word formation are found in the slangs used in the lyrics, such as blending, clipping, coinage, acronym and onomatopoeia. Mostly, the American slangs in the Eminem’s song lyrics are created by the process of blending and clipping.

Abstract

The study concerned on the translation analysis of Indonesian conceptual metaphors found in the novel Tarian Bumi into English as found in its translation novel entitled Earth Dance. The objectives of this study were to identify and analyze the types of Indonesian conceptual metaphor and the translation strategies applied in translating them. The data were the sentences and quotations which belonged to Indonesian conceptual metaphors found in the Indonesian novel Tarian Bumi and their translation products that were found in the novel Earth Dance. This study applied the theoretical framework proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) in identifying and analyzing the Indonesian conceptual metaphors. Meanwhile, in revealing the translation strategies used by the translator of the novel, the study applied the theoretical framework proposed by Larson (1998). Based on observation, this study revealed that Tarian Bumi consisted of 102 Indonesian conceptual metaphors in which are divided into three types; 46 data (45%) were identified as structural metaphors, 40 data (39%) were ontological metaphors, and 16 (16%) data were orientational metaphor. Based on the investigation of translation strategy, it was found that the translator applied the strategy of translating metaphor into metaphor by 72 data found (70.6%), metaphor into non-figurative language by 26 data found (25.5%), and metaphor into simile by 4 data found (3.9%).

Abstract

This study aims at investigating motivation, attitude, needs, and evaluation of the students of IAIN Mataram in learning English as a general subject. The data were gathered from questionnaire and they were presented descriptively. The result of questionnaire showed that the students considered English very important (98%). The motivation of the students in learning English was very high (93%) and they learned English for intrinsic reasons (77%). The attitude of the students in learning English was very positive (84%). The students preferred learning English visually to learning orally (81%). The teacher taught seriously (95%), the teacher gave various tasks ((91%), and the teacher gave motivation to the students (95%). The class size supported the teaching and learning process (99%). The students competed seriously in learning English (77%). The students needed English relevant to their content subject (90%) and they needed more reading skill than the three other skills (83%).

Abstract

The present paper is attempting to reveal the students’ need towards the authentic materials in ESP teaching at Biology Department of Ganesha Univeristy. There were 154 students taken as the subjects of the study. The primary data were gained from the responses given by the respondents through questionnaire, while the secondary data were taken from documents study on the curriculum, and syllabus of ESP, and interview in order to get the justification and clarification towards some selection on the questionnaire. The data show that the students need authentic materials such as newspaper article, scientific journal, international papers, internet, technical documents, manual, textbook, and grammar textbook. In spite of the authenticity, it is considered to able to promote students’ motivation and bridging the gap between the classroom situation and real life purposes.
